Heidenheim Defeat Sees Borussia Dortmund Rise to League Summit

Borussia Dortmund clinched a dominant 4-2 home win at Signal Iduna Park against Heidenheim, propelling them to the summit of the Bundesliga table after three games played. They hold a narrow one-point lead over Heidenheim, with Heidenheim positioned in second place. Borussia Dortmund started the match best and took the lead when Donyell Malen netted in the 12th minute, with an assist by Karim Adeyemi, making it 1-0. In the 17th minute Karim Adeyemi increased the lead for Borussia Dortmund with an assist by Julian Brandt. Heidenheim's Marvin Pieringer made it 2-1 in the 39th minute as he found the net, with an assist by Haktab Omar Traore. In the 41st minute Karim Adeyemi increased the lead for Borussia Dortmund with an assist by Julian Ryerson. It took until the 74th minute before Maximilian Breunig reduced the score Heidenheim. The 4-2 goal came in extra time, when Emre Can scored for Borussia Dortmund. 'We played a good match. The conceded goals were unnecessary. I took self-belief from the U21s,' Karim Adeyemi told DAZN. 'I'm happy about the two goals; I hoped that I would get a third one but the three points are more important,' he added. Borussia Dortmund play VfB Stuttgart on 22 September, VfL Bochum 1848 on 27 September and FC Union Berlin (away) on 5 October. Heidenheim's next opponents are SC Freiburg on 21 September, FSV Mainz 05 on 28 September and RB Leipzig (home) on 6 October.

Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy to make debut against Heidenheim.

Borussia Dortmund vs. Heidenheim kicks off at 19:30 [GMT+1] on Friday, September 13 at Signal Iduna Park. Borussia Dortmund settled for a goalless draw with Werder Bremen just before the international break. The Black and Yellow finished the game with ten men after Nico Schlotterbeck [R. 73'] was sent off for a second yellow card with 17 minutes left to play. “It was far too easy to defend against us today. There were several areas in which we weren't good today,” was Nuri Şahin's verdict after the game. Since replacing Edin Terzić as Dortmund’s manager, Şahin is yet to taste defeat in three competitive games across all competitions, having picked up a 4-1 victory over Phönix Lübeck in the DFB Pokal. The hosts have four points [1W, 1D, & 0L] after two matches, leaving them in fourth place on the Bundesliga table. Next in line is a game against Heidenheim, the only side which has kept a shutout this season alongside Dortmund. Both sides met for the first time last season, with both matches ending in a draw, making Heidenheim the only team BVB has never beaten in the BL. However, the hosts are heading into this clash on a three-match winning streak on home soil and could put together a longer run at home for the first time since the start of last season. A 4—2—3—1 with Maximilian Beier in attack is expected for Friday's clash. Schlotterbeck is suspended for this match following a red card last time out, while Giovanni Reyna and Kjell Wätjen are sidelined with injuries. Serhou Guirassy could make his debut for the club having recovered from injury. 'He's making an excellent impression in training; I'm glad he's back,' Nuri Şahin said in a pre-match press conference. Heidenheim have two opening wins in the Bundesliga to make it five straight wins across all competitions since the start of the 2024-25 campaign. Frank Schmidt's men recorded their biggest-ever Bundesliga win with a 4-0 victory over Augsburg at the Voith Arena on Match Day 2. The win took them to the top of the BL table with six points while having a superior goal difference than second-placed Bayern Munich and third-placed Leipzig, both also with six points. It is the first time ever that Heidenheim are league leaders in the competition, having become the 35th club to do so since the league's inception. In addition, the visitors have recorded two clean sheets in two opening matches, which is the first time they have done so in the topflight. They are expected to mirror the hosts’ 4—2—3—1, with Marvin Pieringer leading the attack. Injured, Thomas Keller [ACL] and Lennard Maloney [back] are the only absentees for Schmidt's side.
