Ninety XI/September 21, 2024

Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach kicks off at 17:30 [GMT+1] on Saturday, September 21, at Deutsche Bank Park.

After the loss in the league opener, Frankfurt bounced back with back-to-back wins, including a 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim on matchday two, followed by a 2-1 win against Wolfsburg last time out. Dino Toppmöller’s side took the lead right on the half-hour mark courtesy of ex-Wolfsburg midfielder Omar Marmoush [30’] but were pegged back in the second half. However, the Egyptian rose to the occasion once again, completing his brace [82’ P.] from the spot, eight minutes from stoppage time, as the Eagles snatched all three points against his former team. ‘Even though a penalty decided it in the end, the victory is the reward for the team’s mentality,’ Toppmöller said after the game. With the win, the Eagles sit in sixth place, tied on points with fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen. Having enjoyed their best start to a Bundesliga campaign in four years, with six points from back-to-back wins, Frankfurt will now aim to secure a third consecutive top-flight victory for the first time under Toppmöller when they welcome Mönchengladbach this weekend. Recent success against the Foals provides confidence going into Saturday’s clash. The Eagles have recorded victories in three of the last six league meetings [3W, 3D, & 0L] between both sides, remaining undefeated against the visitors during this period. This is the longest Frankfurt has gone in the league without losing to Mönchengladbach. Furthermore, the hosts have lost just two of their last 28 Bundesliga games on home soil. A 3—4—2—1 could be seen this weekend, with Hugo Ekitike in attack.

After a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Stuttgart last time out, Mönchengladbach [LWL] slipped to 13th place on the league table, tied on points with 12th-placed Wolfsburg, who have a superior goal difference. The Foals found themselves trailing against Stuttgart moments into the first half, but Alassane Pléa [27’] restored parity with an audacious effort just two minutes before being forced off by injury. However, the French attacker’s effort was rendered futile as Gladbach conceded two quick-fire goals in the second half, resulting in back-to-back home league losses. ‘Obviously, we hope that there's no major damage to his knee and it's just a knock,’ Gerardo Seoane said after the game on Pléa’s injury. They travel to Frankfurt this weekend, hoping to return as happy travellers, with victory leaving the visitors with back-to-back away league wins for just the second time in the 21st century, having done so in 2019/20. However, Gladbach have won just one game in their last nine Bundesliga outings [1W, 3D, & 5L]. Tomáš Čvančara could start in attack in a 4—2—3—1 against Frankfurt.
