Three goals from Manchester United sealed a convincing victory against Southampton at St. Mary's Stadium in the Premier League. With a resolute defensive performance, Manchester United kept Southampton at bay, resulting in a comprehensive 3-0 win for the away side.

The match was even in terms of goals until Manchester United took the lead in the 35th minute through Matthijs de Ligt, with an assist by Bruno Fernandes.

In the 41st minute Marcus Rashford increased the lead for Manchester United with an assist by Amad Diallo.

Southampton's Jack Stephens was sent off in the 79th minute.

Manchester United netted once more, this time through Alejandro Garnacho, with an assist by Diogo Dalot, in the 90th minute.

Cameron Archer had the opportunity to put the Saints in front from the penalty spot but saw his attempt and follow-up saved by United's goalkeeper, Onana. An event that marked the turning point in the game.

'That [the penalty save] was the turning point in the game. We got momentum, and then you see how small the margins are,' Erik ten Hag said after the win.

Southampton now have four straight defeats.

It leaves Manchester United in seventh place and that Southampton are in 19th place.

Southampton's next Premier League games are against Ipswich Town (home) on 21 September, AFC Bournemouth (away) on 30 September and Arsenal (away) on 5 October. Manchester United play Crystal Palace (away) on 21 September, Tottenham Hotspur (home) on 29 September and Aston Villa (away) on 6 October.
